New Narratives is a student led peer-to-peer group which was created to spread awareness on substances (such as alcohol and drugs) and information about Dyfed Drug and Alcohol Service (DDAS) and harm reduction approaches. This is due to research indicating that students are far more likely to approach other students than professionals for support. Some ways in which we are doing this and plan to do so in the future include a student based clinic where other students are able to seek initial support in a welcoming and confidential environment. New Narratives is also involved in having stands at University events such as freshers fair and more.

We are eager to welcome more students into New Narratives. There are various roles and activities which may be ideal for a range of skill sets and interests. We are looking for individuals who are euthanistic about the goals and aims of the group. Those who are interested will also receive training surrounding Substance Awareness & Harm Reduction.

Some of the roles and activities are listed below:

  • The set up and running of NEW NARRATIVES social media accounts e.g. Instagram and TikTok, to share specific harm reduction advice and warnings for students in Aberystwyth. Accounts to highlight in Instagram bio that the group works in collaboration with @barodproject and @ddas_dyfed
  • Support with DDAS with Uni events, society socials, freshers fair, freshers welcome week, and, when confident, providing a peer led drop in for students (where referrals can be made to the DDAS team where necessary).
  • Creation of harm reduction flyers for popular substances e.g. alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine, to distribute in the Students’ Union and other relevant places. Information on DDAS, it’s campus clinic and how to access all their services confidentially could also be distributed.
  • Student accommodation drop ins on key nights e.g. society socials, freshers and when popular events are on e.g. dance music events. The group could use these drop ins to give out harm reduction resources e.g. anti-spiking advice/support, along with harm reduction info for ‘party substances’ e.g. alcohol, ecstasy and ketamine. Information on DDAS and how to access services could also be distributed.
  • Spreading awareness of project and promoting recruitment.
