Harriers:
Our first North Wales Cross Country league fixture in Bangor went very well, we had a full large minibus of runners and both the Men and Women finished very high up, including a second place in the men’s race. We got promoted to division 1 last year form the 2nd, and we are currently a strong mid table in the 1st. This is despite losing some of our very good 3rd year runners to graduation last year. Our socials have been bigger and better than the last couple of years, with around 20 people regularly. Feedback has been very good from Freshers and we keep getting more members.
Tarannau:
We have won all of our games this semester, socials and recruitment have been great. They have made me feel part of a community
Men’s Rugby:
We had our homecoming, which was good fun. A number of previously graduated members came back on short notice and participated alongside women's rugby in a touch rugby event. As well, we won our first game this season last week against Cardiff Medics, which was a good first win for us. We also held several sober socials in Llywd Inn during the Rugby World Cup. And a fresher got a hat trick in their first full game.
Aberystwyth Labour Students:
We had a collaboration with a by-election labour candidate in Penparcau. We have been engaging with the local community with attendance at the remembrance service. We changed our social day to Thursday and it's working better for us and our society's dynamic.
Aberystwyth University Equestrian (AUE):
Our A team have been improving and Mimi Mayer Payne has done exceptionally well placing in top 5 at every competition.
Aberystwyth Conservation Volunteers (ACV):
In total, we have done 8 local tasks, from gorse clearance on Pen Dinas to raking and tree maintenance at a wildflower meadow in Borth. Further afield, we cleared invasive Sitka spruce to protect the Rhiniog National Nature Reserve, helped bring inside banana plants, Angel’s Trumpets and other tropical plants for the Butterfly House, and dug up tree roots and made apple juice at Hafod Walled Garden. We have reached 55 members, which is an increase of 22% from the same period last year. Due to a successful by-election, we have, for the first time in recent years, all committee positions filled. Since then, we have had a productive meeting to train the new committee members and discuss future plans for ACV. Rachel, our new publicity officer, has been promoting our activities on social media and has updated our notice board in Edward Lhuyd. She also made an amazing crumble from apples in the Gogerddan Orchard to share with our members on task. Cameron, our new garden officer, has already helped run a garden task and is making plans for planting bulbs and vegetables in the community garden outside the SU. Percy, our new social secretary, alongside Theo, who has recently returned from the Netherlands, is running socials every Monday, and they have started organising a Christmas meal and Secret Santa. In other news, a former ACV member, Kathryn, and the fiancé of our minibus driver, Tomos, now works at the butterfly house, and it was great to catch up with her on task. Additionally, we have become increasingly involved in the conservation of local wildlife sites thanks to the help of Alison, the senior ecologist at Ceredigion County Council. We hope to continue with the momentum we have built for conserving and improving the local environment, providing varied, engaging and rewarding tasks for our members for the rest of this semester and into the new year.
AberCrafts:
We’ve had really good turn out and feedback for our craft workshops. We had around 45 people for cat Jewellery making with Aber cats. We also ran a successful crystal ball making workshop which we received some really positive feedback from members.
Ultimate Frisbee:
We have had good interaction with members spirit of the game (frisbee thing) starting to take action.
Men’s Hockey:
We have held our annual alumni weekend on the past weekend. During this we raised over £250 for a charity that is very close to the values of the club, and the weekend as a whole.
AberHike:
We have successfully held a hike and social every week of semester one and we had our Christmas meal.
Scriptwriting:
Our joint murder mystery social was really well attended and worked out well. There will be another in semester 2. Our Q&A workshops have been really informative and great. Both external guest speakers and film lecturers have all asked to come back and do another session. It’s nice to see lectures so closely supporting and working with a society even when they’re really well accomplished themselves. It’s a unique opportunity to source this inside industry information for free and has been extremely interesting and beneficial for members.
Theatre:
We had a brilliant turn out for panto, comming close to selling out. All members involved had great fun and all those that attended the event have given positive feedback. We already have members planning to sign up for our semester two devised performance.
Showdance:
We ran our RAG event which was a pub quiz and had quite a few people turn up. From this event we raised £72 for our chosen charity Magpie. We also ran our own event Festival of Arts which went amazing having to get out more chairs on two occasions during the event. From this event we raised over £300. We also got our members to donate food to a local food bank. In total over these RAG events we raised £500.16!
