Following a recent announcement by the University about changes to library opening hours, and a number of students getting in touch with us I wanted to reach out and give some info as Students’ Union President.

What’s happening?

The opening hours of the Hugh Owen library are going to be changing for the academic year ahead. Level D (ground floor) will be open 24/7 whereas level E and F will be open from 8am to 10pm.

Why is this happening?

Like many universities, Aberystwyth University has been exploring ways to balance student needs while managing budget constraints. The changes to the library’s hours are part of an effort to reduce operational costs without sacrificing essential services.

The Students’ Union was consulted on possible changes last year and over summer and we have worked with the University to ensure a reasonable compromise of keeping level D open 24/7 while closing floors E and F at 10pm (while also considering other workspaces around campus that would remain 24/7).

Working with Will, SU Academic Affairs Officer, we have had discussions with the Pro-vice chancellor for Education and Student Experience and the Director of Information Services who have also agreed that the library will be fully open 24/7 around major deadlines and exam periods.

The University have outlined that closing two floors of the library will save money in a number of ways including heating and lighting and will also save and 1.2 tonnes of carbon emissions

Will the decision be reviewed?

We will be working closely with the University to review library provision (including opening hours and effective use of space and resources) on an ongoing basis.

2:42pm on 10 Medi 24 This is unacceptable and you know it. You are our union, you are meant to fight tooth and nail against ANYTHING which damages us. You need to do better, unless we need to begin discussing votes of no confidence. I for one am not paying more tuition for less support. I was already furious about not getting solo meetings with our tutors, but this is ridiculous
