Hi I’m Charlotte, a 3rd year Environmental Earth Science student and president of Aberystwyth Ultimate Frisbee.
Why do you do Sports?
I was never a sporty person before I came to university but halfway through my first year I thought I should maybe do a bit more than occasionally walk up the hill. After I joined Ultimate Frisbee I kept going because they were really supportive and encouraging. Now I go to keep fit and try to constantly improve in my sport ready for the next game!
What Sports do you do?
I mainly play Ultimate Frisbee, both in and outside of uni. I train a few times a week with the university team and spend most of my weekends during the summer travelling to play for different teams around the country. I recently joined Korfball as a few of my friends suggested I go. I also like to cycle, run and swim.
What challenges have you faced, being a girl, within sport?
Girls can often get overlooked in sport, especially in mixed gender sports. You can come across guys that won't pass to girls because they trust the faster/taller guy on the team. Thankfully, Ultimate Frisbee rules mean that there must be a certain amount of girls playing - and with a shortage of girls throughout the country this means that girls often get picked before the guys! Women teams can be seen as not as good as their male equivalent but I’ve seen more impressive football, rugby and ultimate played by girls!
What have you achieved in sport?
gained qualifications?
Sport has made me a lot more confident. Joining a sport at uni also gives you a great group of mates - you get to go on socials, go to matches and go on tour with each other which is great fun. Our club captain (Emily) went on a coaching qualification sport before term started and we hope to send our other captains and coaches when the next course becomes available.
What do you have to say about the girls in Aber who want to get into sport, but are too scared!?
Just give it a go! I was incredibly shy at my first training session and I fell face first into the floor but still managed to go back. Joining a sport at uni was the best thing I’ve done!
