Society: Aberystwyth LINKS St John

Why we volunteer: Our members join to help others and to get a knowledge of first aid and lifesaving skills. Training progresses in stages from basic CPR, to advance Spinal Immobilisation and delivering Medical Gases such as Entonox. If you stay with St John long enough, you can even gain Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills.

What we do: We volunteer at most events and sports fixtures in Aberystwyth to make sure they are run safely, and if needed, provide first aid to people with injuries or illnesses. Every year we also help during fresher’s week which is a particularly busy time for us!

Benefits of volunteering: Attending events provides an excellent chance for us to really put into practice the skills we have learnt in the classroom. By being a first aider we also gain confidence, people skills, team skills and we learn to stay clam under pressure. It’s also really rewarding knowing that we help other people by making sure that they're enjoying events safely and are provided with medical cover.

Upcoming events: Y Selar, Super Teams (Men's and Women's), Nant Yr Arian Half Marathon, Aber Rugby 7s and the option to go down to Millennium Stadium to cover first aid at the Rugby events (including Six Nation games!)

Current committee: Jess Friedersdorff, Robin Church, Tommy Pugh, Crystal Webster and Elinor Griffiths

To all the volunteers that dedicate their time and skills to help students and people in the local community, thank you! Keep up the good work!
